Southwest and Commerce Boulevard Roundabout Project

Updated Week of May 30, 2022

Construction Updates:

As of Tuesday, May 17, 2022 the roundabout is open! There will be some on-going construction activities over the next several weeks, including green striping for the bicycle facilities. Please continue to drive with caution in the area.

Roundabout Ribbon Cutting Celebration:

The City would like to thank everyone who attended the Southwest and Commerce Boulevard Roundabout Ribbon Cutting Celebration on May 25, 2022. The official opening of this long-awaited project is here, providing an environmentally friendly improvement to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. We would like to thank our City staff and contractors for bringing the project to completion two months ahead of schedule and our businesses and residents for their patience during construction. Please see videos of the event here:

Roundabout Ribbon Cutting
How to Navigate a Roundabout:
  1. Slow down as you approach the intersection
  2. Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the road
  3. Follow instructions of surrounding signage or pavement markers prohibiting certain movements
  4. When there is a large enough gap in the vehicles for you to merge safely, enter the roundabout moving counter-clockwise.

California's "Basic Speed Law" says you can never drive faster than is safe for current conditions. The Southwest and Commerce Boulevard intersection has an advisory speed limit of 15mph. As our residents acclimate themselves to the roundabout, we encourage drivers to be extra mindful of speed, signage, pedestrians, and other vehicles. For more on rules of the road, you can review the California's Driver Handbook.

While construction of the roundabout is intended to increase flow, traffic might still occur. In this case, follow the basic speed law, and decrease your speed accordingly. However, the City overall expects to see a notable reduction in congestion in the surrounding area. In addition, a decrease in the emissions associated with traditional intersections.

Please see the short video here for instructions and examples of how to drive through the City's first roundabout.

The construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Southwest and Commerce Boulevards is replacing the old three-way stop. The project increases safety for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit while improving traffic flow, decreasing travel times, and reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the project included improvements to the neighborhood's sewer capacity.

The project began on January 4, 2022, and is open to traffic on May 17, 2022. There will be some on-going construction activities over the next several weeks, including green striping for the bicycle facilities. Please continue to drive with caution in the area. The City appreciates the community's patience and flexibility of this important traffic facility.

Rohnert Park Road Improvements Update for Week of July 25, 2022:

Southwest and Commerce Roundabout, Project No. 2017-07 - SEE DROPDOWN ABOVE FOR CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

East Cotati Avenue Paving Project
The City of Rohnert Park would like to update you on the ongoing East Cotati Avenue Paving Project. Beginning tomorrow morning at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 21, 2022, on East Cotati Avenue, the traffic signals at the intersections of East Cotati Avenue & Snyder Lane and East Cotati Avenue & Camino Colegio will be put into flash mode (flashing red lights). The intersections will act as a four-way stop day and night and will remain like this until mid-September. Additionally, there will be only one travel lane in each direction along East Cotati Avenue from Sunflower Park to Snyder Lane during this time. Please be aware and drive slow. The City recommends finding an alternate route during this time. If you have any questions regarding this project, please email [email protected] or call 707-588-3300.

Keiser Avenue Improvements

Upcoming work (all schedules are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances)

Work on the final punch-list items for Keiser Avenue is still continuing. It is very important to carefully work out and accomplish these final items for the project, to ensure the new roadway and all other project elements are safe and reliable before it is opened to traffic. These items are continuing.

The opening of Keiser Avenue is anticipated for sometime in August 2022. We will continue to update the timing of the road reopening as progress is made.

Keiser Avenue only accessible to residents, community garden visitors
During this project, Keiser Avenue between Snyder Lane and Kerry Road will remain closed to through-traffic, and open to residents and community garden visitors only. Access for these motorists is from Snyder Lane only. Residents of the Redwood Apartments have access from Petaluma Hill Road and Kerry Road. Your access will periodically be impacted by the construction activity, so please allow time for the contractor to accommodate your vehicles when you are entering and exiting the area.

As this work continues, residents in the area should expect work crews, equipment, trucks entering and exiting the area, noise, and dust. For your safety, please be aware of construction activity and equipment, and observe all traffic signs and any flagger instructions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to provide a smoother, safer roadway.
