Accessory Dwelling Units

The City of Rohnert Park has updated regulations that apply to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) to comply with recent changes to State requirements. Also called “second units” or “granny units,” ADUs and JADUs allow for existing homes to be expanded to provide additional housing opportunities.

On August 25, 2020, the City Council held a public hearing and adopted an ordinance amending the City's code regarding Accessory Dwelling Units to incorporate new State laws. Click here to view the Ordinance.

The City is experiencing an increased interest from homeowners to create ADUs and JADUs and the regulatory changes help make them easier to build. To assist applicants, the City created a summarized table of its ADU regulations (below) or click to open the table as a PDF file.

To apply, please refer to our ADU/JADU Application Checklist. You will need to submit an application for a Certificate of Zoning Compliance. The application also requires a complete and detailed narrative of the project, a complete plan set, and payment.

After your Planning permit is approved, you will work with the Building Division for building permits. You will also need to file a deed restriction and have it recorded at the County Clerk's Office prior to the final Building inspection.
